Almost every Christian has been in the I-need-to-get-it-right-with-God phase and the usual counsel is to read the bible or fast or pray. That is not always easy especially when you haven’t built a relationship with God. How do you give up food for someone you don’t personally know or try to read the bible when you probably don’t like reading in the first place. This post isn’t to say fasting or praying or reading your bible isn’t the way to go but it is to help you get there in case doing those does not come easily to you.
1. UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CAN’T GET CLOSE TO GOD UNLESS HE DRAWS YOU
Jesus says in John 6:44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him”. So ideally your journey should start with a genuine desire. Have a desire to know God and then He’d draw you in. It’s more like He’d lead you on to follow after Him.
2. KEEP GODLY COMPANY
Surround yourself with godly people. If you notice that your friends aren’t godly you may have to cut them off and make new friends. Read 1 Corinthians 15:33. Your life is influenced by the company you keep.
3. CREATE THE RIGHT ATMOSPHERE
Because I love music, I always have gospel music playing almost every time in my room and workplace. I listen to messages a lot too. If you are more visual than verbal you can find preachers that appeal to you and watch their messages as often as possible. You’d find God speaking to you in these ‘casual’ moments. If you are the kind that loves hanging out, connect to a group in line with your interests. For instance if you love acting, ask about Christian drama/acting groups in your community and join one as led.
4. MAKE IT PERSONAL
A lot of people have fallen for the religion in Christianity. Determine that that won’t be you. Your relationship with God does not always start in church. Discover areas in your life that you need answers for and research on them. Those are usually the areas God meets us. It could be your finances or health or family. Know that God is interested in every area of your life.
5. HAVE A SPIRITUAL PARENT
A spiritual mother or father is someone who can raise you up spiritually. It can be a source of blessing if done properly as led by the spirit of God. Ideally he or she should be someone you can easily get in touch with and of course someone you admire. I have both physical and virtual spiritual parents. If you follow them closely you are more likely to end up doing what God called you to do and that’s because you admire something in them that’s most likely in you too.
