Will You Rest?

boatpeace

We all have been through different seasons in our lives. Some really happy moments, other depressing and ‘not-so-great’ moments and some what I’d like to call quiet seasons. The question I’d really want to ask though is, ”What do you do when everything isn’t quite going according to plan?” You know, when life all of a sudden slaps you in the face and you realize you don’t have a hold of things like you thought you did. And so without your permission plunged into a state of panic.

I’m reminded of an encounter the disciples had with Jesus on a boat, Mark 4:35-41 (Please read the text). The bible tells us that the boat was being swamped by the waves. The bible doesn’t exactly tell us what happens between the time of the storm and when Jesus wakes up from sleep but I’d like to think the disciples must have done everything in their power to manoeuvre the boat against the tide. (Of course they had been fishing for a while so they should be able to get around this). All this while though, we are told Jesus was in the stern sleeping. On a cushion maybe. Lol. Then we are told at His command, the winds pipe down and the storms cease. Let me dare to say, that even if Jesus didn’t speak, simply because He was in the boat with them, they would have made it through the storm SAFELY. (I can’t imagine the boat capsizing and Jesus, together with his disciples swimming through the storm screaming to God for help). So here’s what I’m driving at; It’s okay to rest in a storm. Its okay not to do anything. For some reason we always have a desire to fix things. In the end, we  get anxious and frustrated when it does not work out.

‘It is okay to rest and allow The Lord fix it.’

I love what Moses says when the Lord commands him to leave Sinai.

”One day Moses said to the Lord ”You’ve been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the promise land’ but you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me ‘I know you by name and I look favourably on you.’

The Lord replied, ”I will definitely go with you Moses, and I will give you rest- everything will be fine for you.” Exodus 33:12 &14 NLT.

Here is the promise; It’s definitely going to turn out well as long as the Lord is with us. So it’s alright not to have the answers about how you’re going to make it through as long as the Lord promises to be with you. He is our God. Our Immanuel; Our God with us. He is for us and never against us. At first, I’d be frantic with worry any time things didn’t go the way I planned. I’d ask a million more question for every simple question I already did not have an answer to. Such a waste!

It reminds me of the disciples toiling all night, when they decided to go fishing but yet made no catch. Meanwhile, the bible tells us that Jesus was at the shore but they did not recognize Him. He then offers to help with their little fishing problem and at His word again, they caught so much fish they were not able to haul it in (John 21:1-6). See, often times we did not get results not because we didn’t pray, but because we didn’t listen out for the voice of God. We need to get to a place where we can be fully aware of His presence. There is a place of knowing. So that whether we feel His presence or not we recognize that He is with us always.

We are going to need Gods involvement in everything. We are going to need Him to speak before we make a move. It is why we should wait. Why we should rest and hear Him speak. When God speaks it’s going to be a clear direction. So this year I resolve to wait. To be patient and not be in a hurry with my life. We can never go wrong with the leading of His Spirit. So here’s to ‘no moving if the Lord ain’t spoken’. Listening to the inner man over the voices and experiences or opinions of others because one sure thing I learnt in the past year is that life treats each one of us differently.

Let’s be ready to wait on the Lord even if it’s hard and frustratingly slow. One step with Him is better than a thousand miles ahead without Him. In as much as we want to accomplish so many big things in life, (*rolls eyes* Lord knows I have plans!) we are going to need the Lords company on our journey. So, let us allow the Lord break the desires of our own hearts, that will skew the voice of the Lord. Make ourselves pliable in His hands so we can hear Him speak. So that when the storms  rage and we can’t figure it out we know that there is a place in Him called ‘Rest’.

Be blessed.
